In the digital age, social media has become a double-edged sword—capable of fostering democratic engagement but also breeding a dangerous culture of praise-singing that undermines accountability. In Nigeria, where democracy remains fragile, the tendency of citizens, especially political supporters, to engage in blind loyalty rather than constructive criticism has led to a troubling cycle of stagnation. The Bible itself cautions us to “test every spirit” (1 John 4:1), yet our political discourse is often reduced to sycophantic praise rather than issue-based engagement.
Democracy thrives on critical thinking, open debates, and a government that is held accountable by its people. However, in Nigeria, every attempt at constructive criticism is met with hostility, labeled as opposition, or outrightly dismissed as an attack. This culture not only discourages meaningful conversations but also emboldens leaders to govern without fear of scrutiny. Rather than fostering progress, it keeps the nation trapped in a vicious cycle of political and economic underdevelopment—what can be likened to a never-ending development gyration.
The over-glorification of political leaders, especially on social media, creates an environment where sycophancy flourishes and truth is sacrificed on the altar of loyalty. Those who dare to question government policies or demand transparency are often vilified, sometimes even by those who stand to benefit from a more accountable system. Unfortunately, this behavior sustains corruption, weakens institutions, and keeps Nigeria in a state of perpetual coma, unable to fully maximize the gains of democracy.
For Nigeria to break free from this downward spiral, we must embrace issue-based debates that prioritize national interest over personal or party affiliations. Citizens must learn to engage constructively, challenge policies without resorting to insults, and demand better governance without fear of backlash. Until we discard the culture of praise-singing and embrace accountability as a democratic virtue, the nation will remain stuck in a state of arrested development—trapped in the ICU of progress, waiting for a miracle that may never come.
