By Hon. Dr. Kenneth Chibuogwu Deputy National Chairman (Diaspora Engagement), African Democratic Congress (ADC) & 2023 Senatorial Candidate for Delta North.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, a familiar pattern is once again unfolding across the political landscape – from Lagos to Delta, from Sokoto to Calabar. Defections and rumors of defections dominate the airwaves, revealing a political culture driven more by self-interest than by ideology or the welfare of the people. With very few exceptions, politicians continue to jump from one party to another, not out of conviction, but in pursuit of personal gain. This season of defections is fueled by greed and a long-standing tradition of clueless political idolatry that has left the country stagnant. The much-promised dividends of democracy remain elusive, while the Nigerian people bear the brunt of this endless cycle of political opportunism.

In the midst of this political chaos, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) continues to stand out as the real alternative for Nigeria. Under the visionary leadership of  Chief Ralphs Okey Nwosu, ADC has remained steadfast in its commitment to offering Nigerians something better – something different. While others defect in search of power and personal benefits, ADC remains dedicated to building a new Nigeria – one that prioritizes inclusive governance, youth participation, and political accountability.

Unlike the ruling elites, who treat politics as a marketplace for personal enrichment, ADC has pioneered a spartan political project that actively integrates young people into governance. It is the  only political party in Nigeria that recognizes the Diaspora as the 7th geopolitical zone, enshrined in its constitution – a bold move that gives millions of Nigerians abroad a structured voice in national development. Additionally, ADC is the only party with 35% affirmative policies for women, youth, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) – a crucial step towards true inclusivity in governance.

Little wonder ADC fielded the highest number of youth, female, and Diaspora candidates in the last general elections. Yet, despite the grand promises of the Almighty BIVAS and INEC’s so-called “game changer” – the electronic transmission of results – the elections ended in disappointment and as usual the selection of candidates disguised as election continues. What Nigerians witnessed was a tragic waste of human and financial resources. The system failed the people, proving once again that elections in Nigeria are only as credible as those who conduct them. The same circle of political jobbers continues to dominate the space, and  palliative politics remains the order of the day.

As we watch politicians defect shamelessly, without any ideological conviction, we must ask ourselves: Where is Nigeria headed? These defections are not about the people; they are about  political survival and self-preservation. The real losers in this game of opportunism are the ordinary citizens, who continue to be denied the quality leadership they deserve.

Elections have consequences. As Nigerians, we must remember that the choices we make today will shape the future of our democracy. If we continue to allow the same political traders to dictate our future, we will remain trapped in a cycle of broken promises, failed institutions, and wasted opportunities. The time has come to break free from this pattern.

The signs of the times are clear – Nigeria needs a new political direction. ADC has consistently demonstrated its commitment to ethical leadership, youth empowerment, and people-centered governance. As a party, we will continue to call out both within and outside our party a culture driven more by self-interest than by ideology or the welfare of the people. We refuse to be part of the bandwagon of deception and betrayal that has characterized Nigeria’s political system for decades.

To every Nigerian, especially the youth and those who seek genuine change:  Do not lose hope. Instead, intensify your efforts to hold leaders accountable, speak truth to power and seek political alternatives that align with your aspirations. At ADC, we will continue to push forward with our progressive agenda, inclusivity, and integrity. ADC is not just another political party – it is a movement for the future, a platform for those tired of recycled political oppressors.

It is alway time to reject career politicians who jump from party to party without ideology. Nigeria can be better, but only if we choose to build something different – something that prioritizes the people above personal ambition.
