On the occasion of the Akwukwu-Igbo Economic Development Summit 2024, I am deeply honored to present this goodwill message, reflecting on the significance of this historic gathering held on December 28, 2024, at the Akwukwu-Igbo Town Hall.
Although I am not an indigene of Akwukwu-Igbo, I speak with nostalgia and fond memories of my formative years at the Anglican Grammar School, Ubulu-Uku, in 1958. During this time, I shared bonds with several sons of Akwukwu-Igbo, including Samuel Isiekwena, Christian Ohanma, Anthony Agbagwu, and Lawrence Odiakosa. My relationship with these individuals, alongside the remarkable leadership of Chief Enyi Doris Oby Mokobia, a motivator and visionary, has inspired me to contribute my thoughts toward the future of Akwukwu-Igbo.
As we reflect on the summit’s theme, “Akwukwu-Igbo Economic Development,” I urge us to envision beyond the economy and consider the holistic development of Akwukwu-Igbo as the headquarters of Oshimili North Local Government Area. A forward-thinking approach must integrate the following critical components of society:
– The political sub-sector
– The socio-cultural sub-sector
– Human resources and technology
– Regulatory mechanisms, both traditional and institutional
– And, of course, the economic sub-sector
Challenges to Development
I emphasize that real development transcends economic growth and requires addressing systemic challenges. For example, the political class often frustrates noble ideas due to conflicting interests. For sustainable progress, there must be a strategic alignment between political leadership and the aspirations of Ndi Akwukwu.
Similarly, economic plans without social harmony are bound to fail. The issue of land grabbing, which has caused divisions in Oshimili North and Delta State, must be addressed. Unity and collaboration among indigenes are fundamental for success.
Human Capital as a Priority
Akwukwu-Igbo’s greatest asset lies in its people. Sustainable development requires strategic human resource planning, focusing on education, training, and experience. Key questions must be addressed, such as:
– Where are the sons and daughters of Akwukwu-Igbo today?
– What roles will they play in 2030, 2040, and beyond?
– How can we develop them locally and globally to achieve the town’s aspirations?
Regulatory Mechanisms
Finally, economic development without effective regulatory frameworks is unsustainable. A balance must be struck between government policies and traditional values, customs, and conventions that uphold societal integrity.
A Vision for the Future
As we look to the next 50 years, I urge this summit to adopt a long-term perspective. True development takes time, and it is our responsibility to lay the foundation for a brighter future where hope thrives for generations to come.
Thank you for the opportunity to share in this remarkable vision for Akwukwu-Igbo.
