In a recent media chat, with the African Heritage Magazine crew, Hon. Kenneth Chibuogwu Gbandi, former Senate candidate for Delta North and the current Deputy National Chairman (Diaspora Engagement) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), issued a strong call to Nigerian farmers across the country to organize themselves and seek compensation for the wanton destruction of their farms and crops caused by open grazing.
Hon. Gbandi expressed deep concern over the continuous and unchecked destruction of farmlands, describing it as a national crisis and a gross negligence of governance. “It is unimaginable that in this day and age, farmers continue to wake up to destroyed crops and livelihoods, while those in power turn a blind eye. This is no longer just about herder-farmer clashes this is a systemic failure that demands immediate legal and civic action,” Gbandi said.
He emphasized that in states where anti-open grazing laws have been enacted, yet enforcement is lax or non-existent, governments must be held accountable. Gbandi encouraged affected farmers to form coalitions and begin the process of filing class action lawsuits against state authorities that have failed to protect their rights and investments.
“It’s time to take legal action. We can no longer allow our rural farmers to suffer in silence. The only way to begin holding our leaders and representatives accountable is by challenging their inaction in court,” he stated.
Hon. Gbandi highlighted the broader implications of continued losses in the agricultural sector, warning that the country’s food security and rural economy are at risk if farmers continue to bear these losses alone.
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment, through the ADC and his Diaspora engagement platform, to support and amplify the voices of farmers seeking justice.
“The time for silent suffering is over. Farmers, organize yourselves, seek legal redress, and demand justice. We will stand with you,” Gbandi declared.
