Hon. Dr. Kenneth Chibuogwu Gbandi, the National Deputy Chairman (Diaspora Engagement) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and senatorial candidate for Delta North in the 2023 general election, has put forward a series of proposals aimed at swiftly ending the planned protests in Nigeria. Addressing President Bola Ahmed-led federal government, Gbandi’s suggestions are geared towards immediate and impactful reforms.
Firstly, Gbandi urges the government to redirect the $100 million intended for a new presidential jet towards providing soft loans for youth startups across Nigeria. Additionally, he proposes that all existing presidential private jets be converted to presidential fleets, demonstrating a commitment to economic support and fiscal responsibility.
Secondly, he recommends converting the 21 billion ultra-modern vice-presidential building into a world-class medical center. This facility would serve mainly Nigerian youths and senior citizens who cannot afford expensive medical treatments abroad, a privilege often enjoyed by Nigerian politicians and to the general public at subsidized costs. This move aims to enhance healthcare access within the country and reduce the need for medical tourism.
Gbandi also calls for the same level of urgency and dedication in inviting traditional rulers to engage same with registered youth organizations (excluding those that are government-sponsored). He emphasizes the importance of sincere dialogue about the aspirations of Nigerian youths. As part of this engagement, he suggests annual subsidies for youth development programs and global youth exchange initiatives, akin to the subsidies provided for religious pilgrimages.
Lastly, Gbandi advocates for an immediate dialogue to align politicians’ salaries with the national minimum wage. This proposal is intended to foster a sense of solidarity and shared responsibility among Nigeria’s political leaders and the general populace.
Gbandi believes that implementing these measures promptly will create a conducive environment for further dialogue and cooperation with the nation’s youth, ultimately averting the planned protests and paving the way for more constructive interactions.
