- the plight of Nigerian athletes is a reflection of the broader issues plaguing the country
Hon. Dr. Kenneth Chibuogwu Gbandi, a prominent figure in the Nigerian diaspora and National Deputy Chairman (Diaspora Engagement) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has expressed deep admiration for the Nigerian athletes who participated in the Paris Olympics without minding the infrastructure decay in in the country. Despite the numerous challenges they faced, including inadequate training facilities and poor management, the athletes displayed remarkable personal competence and patriotism. However, Gbandi did not hold back in criticizing the current Nigerian government for what he described as a “mediocrity syndrome” that is deeply entrenched in the nation’s administration.
Gbandi, who is known for his long-standing leadership within the European Diaspora, lambasted the government’s approach to appointments, stating that the only qualification required to secure a position is the ability to act as an attack dog for the All Progressives Congress (APC). This, he argued, has led to a situation where meritocracy is sidelined, and capable individuals are overlooked, leading to the decay of various sectors, including sports.
The recent Olympic Games highlighted the stark reality of the challenges Nigerian athletes face. Gbandi pointed out the embarrassing incident where a Nigerian cyclist had to borrow a racing bike from the German squad to compete. This, he said, speaks volumes about the poor state of sports infrastructure in Nigeria. Despite these obstacles, many Nigerian athletes, who also hold dual citizenship, have excelled while competing for other nations like Germany and Ireland. According to Gbandi, their success is a testament to what can be achieved when athletes operate within a functional system.
Gbandi emphasized that the plight of Nigerian athletes is a reflection of the broader issues plaguing the country. He called for a total overhaul of the Nigerian constitution and significant electoral reforms as necessary steps to restore the nation’s hope and achieve the dreams of its citizens. Without such changes, Gbandi warned, Nigeria will continue to face disappointments, not just in the Olympics but in all areas of national life.
