The Diaspora Football Outreach initiative, which began in 2022 in Delta State, has quickly become a beacon of hope and transformation for young Nigerians. Founded by passionate Nigerians in the Diaspora, the program leverages football as a tool for team building, social cohesion, and personal development. Its mission extends beyond the pitch, fostering a sense of community, resilience, and opportunity among youth.
This year, the initiative reaches Gombe State with the Principals Cup, scheduled from January 21st to 25th, 2025. The event will feature over 100 schools from across the state in a thrilling competition that combines sportsmanship with personal growth. Dubbed the first Gombe State Inter-Secondary Schools Football Competition, the Principals Cup presents a unique platform for identifying young football talents while promoting education and teamwork.
Hon. Kenneth Gbandi, the Global Coordinator of GO-Football Outreach, expressed his enthusiasm for the program’s expansion. Speaking to the African Heritage team in his Diaspora City Office in Asaba, Delta State, he emphasized that the initiative is not solely about scouting football talent but also about empowering youth for a brighter future. “This is about building resilience, teaching teamwork, and creating opportunities,” he noted.
Key figures in the program include Coach Andrew Uwe, an ex-international and former captain of the Flying Eagles, and Coach Henry Ambrose, a UEFA-licensed coach. Their expertise and mentorship will guide talent selection from the participants throughout the competition, further enriching the experience of already excited teams.
Gombe State fondly referred to as the “Jewel in the Savannah,” is set to host the event in collaboration with the „Green White Green Sports Centre“, a proud partner of the Diaspora Football Outreach. Following the success in Delta State, this expansion to the Northeast geopolitical zone marks another milestone for the initiative.
The Diaspora Football Outreach continues to prove that football is more than just a game it is a vehicle for empowerment, community building, and a brighter tomorrow for Nigeria’s youth.
