On September 14, 2023, in a discussion with the African Heritage International Magazine, I raised an alarm about Nigeria’s gradual descent into totalitarianism. The recent arrest of Mr. Dele Farotimi, a prominent human rights lawyer, by the Ekiti police at the behest of Aare Afe Babalola, though not directly involving the presidency, serves as a glaring reminder of the deepening culture of impunity within Nigeria’s political and legal systems.

The manner in which the arrest unfolded with security agents playing a key role in what can only be described as an abduction—reveals how the “might is right” mentality is increasingly becoming the order of the day. This incident goes beyond a personal legal matter; it signifies a disturbing trend where those who challenge the powers that be, especially prominent political figures or in the legal and human rights sectors, are increasingly at risk of unjust treatment.

Mr. Farotimi, known for his vocal advocacy for justice and human rights, is not someone who should be silenced or intimidated. As millions of Nigerians, both home and abroad, rally behind the call for his immediate release, we must question: Who truly fears the idea of a fair and transparent legal process in Nigeria? Why is there such resistance to allowing someone like Farotimi to defend their rights without fear of retribution? This arrest is a test of Nigeria’s commitment to democratic values and justice. The world is watching.

We demand that Mr. Farotimi be granted the due process he deserves, free from political interference and the whims of those who seek to stifle dissent. His case is emblematic of the challenges facing Nigeria’s judiciary and the broader struggle for democracy. Let us stand firm in ensuring that the rule of law prevails and that all Nigerians, regardless of their status or views, are afforded the protections guaranteed by the Constitution.
