Dear Colleagues,
In light of the ongoing trials of the #EndBadGovernance protesters, I have issued directives to all branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (@NigBarAssoc) to actively monitor these proceedings. Our objective is to ensure that every trial is conducted fairly, with strict adherence to due process, and that no protester is denied their legal rights.
Recognizing the urgency and importance of this matter, I have also initiated a Pro Bono support program specifically designed to provide legal representation to protesters who are unable to secure counsel. This initiative is a critical component of our broader commitment to uphold justice and protect the rights of all citizens, particularly those who are vulnerable.
To ensure the effectiveness of our efforts, the Nigerian Bar Association Citizens’ Liberties Committee (NBA-CLC) has been tasked with close coordination with the Chairmen and Human Rights Committees of NBA branches in regions where these prosecutions are taking place. This collaborative approach is essential to guarantee that no defendant is left without representation or subjected to any form of injustice.
Our legal teams are diligently attending court sessions, observing the proceedings, and ensuring that the trials are conducted transparently and in full compliance with the law. The Nigerian Bar Association is steadfast in its mission to uphold the rule of law, safeguard the human rights of all defendants, and ensure that justice prevails.
We remain committed to these principles and will continue to monitor the situation closely, taking action wherever necessary to defend the liberties of those involved in the #EndBadGovernance protests.
Best regards,
Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN
President, Nigerian Bar Association
