It is with great concern and a heavy heart that I address the recent violent incidents that occurred by Otopec filling station, along Airport Road, Benin City. Yesterday, July 18th, 2024, at about 2pm, private cabs displaying our ADC campaign posters and stickers were brutally attacked by armed thugs associated with the ruling PDP. The driver was severely beaten, and his vehicle’s windshields and windows were shattered. His only offense was supporting a party other than the PDP.
In a separate, tragic incident along the same Airport Road, alleged armed PDP supporters clashed violently with a convoy, which had the APC gubernatorial candidate, resulting in the loss of life and several injuries. This senseless violence is a grave assault on our democratic principles and the peace of our beloved Edo State.
As the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, the Governor must immediately intervene and call these marauding thugs to order. It is his duty to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations.
Politics should not be a zero-sum game where violence and intimidation are used as tools to suppress opposition. Edo State, known for its proud and civilized people, must not be tarnished by the desperate actions of those who seek to win at any cost. This race to anarchy is a path where everyone is a loser, and it is the ordinary citizens who suffer the most.
We utterly condemn all forms of political violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to them during this difficult time. We also wish a speedy recovery to all those injured in these heinous attacks.
We urge the so-called establishment political parties ( Labour, APC, and PDP) to listen to the voice of the people and engage in a respectful and democratic contest. Let us allow the will of the people to prevail through peaceful and fair means. Our campaign remains committed to promoting a vision for Edo State that is inclusive, progressive, and rooted in the principles of democracy and respect for all.
To the voters and supporters of the ADC, I extend my deepest sympathies and gratitude for your unwavering support despite the challenges. Your courage and commitment to change inspire us to continue this journey with even greater resolve. We stand with you and promise to uphold the dignity and honour of our beloved state.
Let us come together to build a future where democracy thrives, and every voice is heard. Edo State deserves leaders who will protect and serve, not intimidate and oppress. Join us in this noble cause to bring about the positive change we all envision for Edo State.
