Dr. Joy A. Alemazung African Man of the Year Germany 2015/2016
Dr. Joy A. Alemazung holds a double MA in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and a PhD in Political Science on States Constitutions, Political Transformation and Governance in Sub-Saharan Africa from the University of Kiel, Germany.
Currently Dr. Alemazung is the project manager for the federal states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria at Engagement Global gGmbH, an institution of the federal ministry of economic cooperation and development responsible for the promotion of civic and political education, development politics and municipal development in the federal states of Germany. He is also an associate lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences, School of International Business in Bremen, Germany. After serving as a national board member and project manager for the Deutscher Evangelischer Kirchentag 2015 (www.kirchentag.de) (http://www.kirchentag.org.uk/) in Stuttgart, Dr. Alemazung was elected member of the presiding national assembly (Präsidialversammlung) of the „Deutscher Evangelischer Kirchentag“ (made up of all the protestant churches in Germany). As the only African in the assembly and considering the fact that he garnered the majority of votes ahead of more than 9 contestants vying for this significant position in the national presiding assembly of the Deutscher Evangelischer Kirchentag, there is no doubt that Dr. Alemazung’s commitment, competence and zest in doing what he does for the wellbeing of our society is outstanding. Furthermore, his election to this noble body demonstrates the recognition his expertise and personality gets which goes beyond race and national borders.
As a committed researcher and consultant in development, international politics and comparative governments as well as migration and globalization, Dr Alemazung is the Managing Editor of the Global Applied Sociology Journal, a senior fellow and former chairman of the African Good Governance Network at DAAD, and a reviewer for the African Journal of Political Science and International Relations. As a social science expert and motivational speaker Dr. Alemazung has published articles and books amongst others: on the impact of the global financial crisis on the reform processes in sub-Sahara Africa, and on the African Political System (edited volumes); State constitutions and worthless governments in Africa (monograph).
Besides Dr. Alemazung’s engagement and commitment for the African community and society in general supporting individuals and NGOs in their development initiatives, his desire and effort to see a united force in working towards a better community is very strong. Thus, from the point of the jury perhaps the most significant part of his work is his initiative for the establishment and promotion of a platform/network for politically elected officials of African Descent in German municipalities, state and federal assemblies (parliaments). As decision makers with the mandate of the electorate in their different constituencies and parties, these political role models can through their engagement, tasks and political mandate form a more effective „institution“ to effectively forester migrants participation, recognition and acceptance as well as their rights and responsibilities in Germany. Considering the UN Decade (2015 -2024) for people of African descent which began this year such a network would facilitate the sensitization of the German society and promote the implementation of the goals of the UN Decade in Germany. Thus, the initiative is designed amongst others to motivate and support young migrants so that they can contribute meaningfully to political discuss and general development in Germany as well as to sensitize and inform fellow migrants of the social, political and cultural potentials and opportunities in Germany. Dr. Alemazung is a proud husband and father of three children.
Dr. Susan Enjema Aweh is a Cameroon-Nigerian, born and raised in Cameroon. After her A-Levels she moved to Germany for studies. She did the German language course in Wuppertal and then read medicine at the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg.
As a professional she is very passionate about preventive medicine in general and progressive health care in developing countries. Since 2005 she has regularly given back to (Africa) the Cameroonian health care system through voluntary work in hospitals and seminars in Cameroon. In 2013 and 2014 she was granted an Award by CAMFOMEDICS for being part of a team of doctors who launched a Continues Medical Education Academy “iMED” in September 2012 for medical professionals in Cameroon. This program offers various courses in ECG, Sonography, Wound Management, Basic Life Support and Cardiopulmonary Monitoring.
She is also a regular contributor to various magazines on educative and informative health topics. (Fab Afrique Magazine- international, Sonne Magazine – regional magazine Germany, O’Ohboso- local Magazine Germany).
As a health educator in innovative preventive medicine she runs an educative website on health doktorsea.com. She also hosted a video program which educates the masses in pidgin English on important and growing health threats. 2015 she won the Cameroon Career Women’s Award in Medicine.
Despite her demanding career as a medical doctor, she actively facilitated intercultural dialogues in various forums in order to break down barriers of intolerance and xenophobia, which unfortunately is widely spread in the east of Germany where she studied. She realized quite early the need to combat such social vices and as a student she founded the NGO “Baumhaus e.V” which catered for children in need. Rhema Grace Orphanage in Ombe Limbe was the main beneficiary. She and other students could raise over a million FCFA which was donated to the orphanage’s electricity project. Then as a student, she was awarded the 2007 DAAD Prize of Excellence for academics and socio-political engagement.
She is the founder and writer of „a Sister in Germany” an inspirational website, which portrays success stories of Africans in Germany. Thus using not just her story but that of other role models of African descend in Germany to inspire and encourage others, especially women of the younger generation. Her website, which started as a hobby, has a total reach of about 200,000 readers worldwide. 2014 she was voted into the list of “100 most influential Africans in Germany” by African Heritage Magazine.
As a facilitator within the African community in Germany, she has been very functional in the organization of various Empowerment and Economic Forums geared towards giving a perspective and improving the standard and quality of life of the African community in Germany including the annual SOBAN People’s Empowerment Forum, SHESAN Business Forum, documentary on the Cameroonian Diaspora in Germany.
